ESTIMATES

A basic inspection and estimate of the radio is free with repair. This includes safety test and visual inspection of all moving and electronic parts. Shipping costs not included.

Please note that many times a basic radio servicing must be completed before the full extent of repair can be known. Therefore, estimates of radios with original components will start out at the cost of the basic service in the list above for your radio. Any radio that has the original paper and electrolytic capacitors is a hazard. Also, because the failure rate of old capacitors is high, the radio will not work more times than not. In order to make a complete assessment of the repairs, the basic service has to be completed first.

RADIO REPAIR PRICING

The above list is our prices for various repairs. Basic Service for radios include the following:

  • Thorough cleaning of the chassis, case, and knobs.
  • Cleaning and lubrication of moving parts and switches
  • Replacement of all paper capacitors, and replacement of resistors as needed.
  • Replacement of Electrolytic Filter Capacitors
  • Alignment of tuned circuits.

WIRING

Many radios manufactured before 1945 did not use quality materials for wiring, thus we find a lot of radios from this era to have crumbling wires in the circuitry. These radios are very dangerous and MUST have all wiring replaced. This can be a very time consuming endeavor and, in some cases, very difficult. When wiring is an issue with any radio we will consult with the customer on pricing. Please note that ANY radio coming into the repair shop needing new wiring will be rejected for repair if the customer declines new wiring. This is a major safety issue that we will not be party to due to the probability of electrical risks and injury.

TUBES

Tubes are extra. We do not stock tubes and order from outside vendors. We have an extensive network of sources to order from and will always get the best product for the price. Tubes usually run anywhere from about $5.00 to $15.00 plus shipping, but there are some rare ones out there that can go for a considerable amount more. We will try to combine shipping on all orders for parts but unfortunately there are many vendors that only specialize in certain parts…there are a few all-in-one vendors and we will work with you to get the best overall price possible. Outside orders will always be accompanied by either an invoice or shipping slip from that vendor.

CASE WORK (REPAIR AND RESTORATION OF BAKELITE AND WOOD CASES)

Case work is not included in the above prices. We will do minor cosmetic case work if requested. The restoration of wood cases is best left to the professionals!

REBUILDING

We do not restore radios that are missing major components, such as tuning capacitors, tube sockets, etc. We are more than happy to consult on “basket case” radios and will make a determination to move forward on any repair based on the customer’s desire and availability of components. Unfortunately, major rebuilds are not cost efficient due to a variety of reasons and can run up to $500.00 depending on the rarity and availability of certain components.

FOREIGN RADIOS

For other radios, such as German built or other uncommon designs, pricing will be on a per radio basis. Certain German radios are difficult to find service information in English, thus making complete repair very difficult.
